Although the trend in marketing is to go digital, consumers flocking to the convenience of online shopping, and spending more time on social media than ever, we must admit human touch is something consumers are still looking for, including physical locations for hangout among friends, and spending time on weekends in brick and mortar stores such as shopping malls, especially in Hong Kong. It is only the way how we are transacting that is changing. We should not mistaken “Digital transformation” as a process to completely move everything online, but rather the success will rely on how well we incorporate digital elements throughout the entire omni-channel customer journey, let it be online and in the offline world.

Digital Kiosks can have a wide array of purposes, however we in general categorise them into either for functional or engagement purposes. One thing to note is here we are talking about digital kiosks that entice engagement with the users and not just Digital Signage that only deliver one-way communication which are two very different things under the hood.

For example, vending machines were deployed to handle gift or sampling distribution, thus automating the entire customer journey from registration to redemption.

While in some scenarios, drawing the attention of passersby is the main mission. The bystander effect in psychology tells us that if you successfully gather a group of shoppers to engage with the kiosk, the odds are more shoppers will be interested to find out and participate.
