Market Challenge
Aligning Modern Expectations with MUJI’s Minimalist Excellence
Three core issues emerged:
1. User-Centric Gaps: Customers sought effortless navigation, instant gratification in loyalty programs, and deeper connections through digital engagement.
2. Legacy Tech Stack: The original app’s interface and reward mechanisms—designed for pre-2020 standards—need enhancement to align with the more intuitive design expectations currently favored in retail and F&B apps
3. Regional Needs: The Hong Kong-Macau market required localized features, such as real-time stock visibility across physical stores and frictionless integration with in-store POS and cafés.
Key Objectives
1. Seamless Integration and Loyalty Program Implementation
Create a frictionless experience for users, enabling them to earn MUJI points from both in-store and eShop purchases, with promotional point rules such as birthday points based on the order amount.
2. Loyalty Reward Redemption
Allow members to redeem their earned points for special rewards and cash coupons through a straightforward user flow, enabling easy coupon use in-store by scanning a QR code.
3. Enhance User Engagement
Introduce features that foster regular interaction with the app, keeping users updated on promotions, events, and product availability.
Core Strategy
Rewriting the Rules of Loyalty and Convenience
Our approach centered on three pillars: clarity, consistency, and community. By analyzing shopping patterns and conducting user workshops in Hong Kong, we designed a solution that mirrors the convenience of MUJI’s physical spaces in the digital realm.
- Loyalty Reinvented: We make rewards visible, accessible, and relevant to cater personalized needs of every user, whether for everyday purchases, birthday treats, or seasonal campaigns like MUJI Week.
- Tech Meets Tradition: The app’s upgrade had to honor MUJI’s minimalist design language. Biometric logins, Firebase Integration, Barcode Scanning and real-time points updates were built without compromising the brand’s signature clean aesthetic.
- Cross-Channel Harmony: Users now earn points seamlessly across web, retail, and café transactions. The app bridges online and offline experiences through unified tracking and redemption pathways.
The Execution
Precision in Design and Functionality
We delivered a complete app overhaul in 4 months, balancing technical rigor with design finesse.
1. Unified Points Engine
- Instant Point Earning: Points accrue in real time for every dollar spent in stores, cafés, or the eShop. The system also supports point refunds for any refunds or void transactions.

- Dynamic Promotions: Birthday points, seasonal bonuses, and limited-time campaigns (e.g., double points during holidays) are pre-programmed for automatic rewards.
- Flexibility in Redemption: Members can convert points to cash coupons via a QR code at checkout to streamline in-store experiences.

2. Enhanced Product Discovery
- Seamless Product Browsing: A Barcode scanning feature allowing users to scan or input product codes for instant access to pricing, store availability (sizes/colors), and digital product pages.
- Cross-Store Stock Insight: Real-time inventory updates for all Hong Kong-Macau locations

3. Engagement Through Simplicity
- My Account Transparency: Users can access a detailed overview of their activities through the My Account page, which displays transaction histories, including paid amounts, adjustments to MUJI points, and all records of sales transactions

- Event-Driven Connection: The app now serves as a portal for MUJI workshops, allowing customers to view and sign up for various brand events, fostering community engagement and participation.
- Real-Time Weather Information: The MUJI app features real-time weather information displayed prominently on the homepage, providing customers with a cozy and heartwarming experience, reinforces MUJI’s brand positioning.

Point Collections
- Unified Points Management: It allows points to flow across different segments, amplifying the value of customer engagement and deepening loyalty, thus cultivating a seamless brand experience
- Dynamic Transaction Flexibility: The system facilitates point refunds and void transactions, enhancing user adaptability and ensuring a smoother, more responsive shopping experience.
Product Information
- Barcode Interaction: To enhance convenience and empowers customers to make informed purchasing decisions with confidence.
- (Upcoming Feature) Real-Time Inventory Insights: This feature will enhance operational efficiency and enable instant product availability checks, creating a seamless shopping experience that fosters trust and customer satisfaction.
